rising dough

I was at Panera Bread, a restaurant, the other day and I saw a picture of dough. It looked as though it had just risen. I have never made bread from scratch nor know how to. So I wondered how bread rises. I have heard of something about the yeast and kneading it. I think it is so awesome how that happens. I remember being a little kid and making doughnut with my grandma. We would always make my own small batch of dough but for some reason the doughnuts would never come out right like hers. My mom always said I just don’t have the hands(translates better in Spanish) to bake. I don’t know if that is true…..shouldn’t it be if you follow the recipe the bread will come out right?

mold in water???

So I had some drinks with ice in a tub a couple of days ago. I forgot all about them and earlier today I saw that there was some type of mold in it. What is up with that? How does mold grow in water like that? I wonder what happens inside the water that it gets all green and then smells. I predict that it was the predisposed dirt in the tub. My roommate seems to think that it is due to it being left outside for several days. I wonder who is right?

Fruit Flies!!!!

What is up with fruit flies? I hate them.

So, this last week my roommate had bought some really ripe bananas. She forgot that she had bought them so they ripened even more. All of a sudden one day when I got home from student teaching there was like twenty little fruit flies. They are so tiny and there are soooooooo many!! I tried catching them and killing them but I only got a few. For the following days we would see them all around the house. YUCK! One time I was in the restroom and I spent five minutes trying to catch the two that were in there. Last night me and my other roommate were wondering how fruit flies come about. I think that the mold or fungus of the old fruit makes them but my roommate believes that the sweet nectar of the fruit attracts them and thus they grow around fruit. I wonder who is correct? What a mystery!

P.S. I really hate those things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

paper or plastic or reusable?

In my line of work I’m inside a grocery store a lot because I have six out of ten clients that either work in a Vons or an Albertsons. This means I come in contact with the issue of using reusable bags rather than plastic. As I observe grocery store customers, I notice that many of them chose to use plastic bags when they shop. I wonder to myself….do these people know the impact that plastic makes on our environment? Do they reuse these bags, recycle these bags or do they just dispose of them like all the other trash they make?

As I remember the few yet disturbing facts I’ve heard about the plastic bag, I get sad for our earth. I’ve heard that plastic not just bags but all plastic is not biodegradable and will stay on our earth forever. Could that be true? If so, how much longer can we live like this….no wait…the question is…how much longer can our earth survive like this. I must confess that I am guilty of using the plastic bag on occasion. I do try to redeem myself by reusing it as much as possible.

Do people really care about recycling?

contact lenses/dry eyes

This past week or so, my eyes get so dry. Since I wear contact lenses I can only assume it’s due to my wearing contact lenses. I wonder why my eyes get so dry that at times it becomes painful. I looked online (righthealth.com) and it states that when you wear contacts for an extensive period of time it may affect the the tear film that covers the outer surface of the eye. So I after some thought, I realized that I wear my contact for about 17-18 hours a day. This must be linked to my dry eyes. I still wonder why our bodies don’t just make enough moisture for our eyes to feel hydrated at all times; with or without contacts?

Organic Food

I went shopping for food a couple of days ago. I always get bananas and they were all green. I hate when that happens. I had no choice but to by the organic. Although I can never taste the diffence, I don’t really like buying organic bananas. They always go bad in one to two days and they are always much smaller than “regular” bananas. Why is that? Shouldn’t they be about the same?

I then begin to wonder whether organic food is better than non-organic food? Usually it all looks just as good just not as sweet or salty. I would imagine that it’s better for our environment but would it be better for our health? If so than why isn’t all food organic? Wouldn’t that be beneficial to everyone? Yet, as a student it is definitely harder to purchase organics because organic food tends to be more pricey. I think I’ll stick to non-organic bananas for now.
